Do You Have to Feed a Venus Flytrap?

Posted by Vincent Green on

It's one of the first questions new flytrap owners ask: "What do I feed it, and do I have to?" Here's the short answer: no, you don't have to feed your Venus flytrap. It's very good at feeding itself. This guide explains why, plus what's okay to offer if you'd like to, and what to avoid.

Why you don't need to feed your flytrap

Like other plants, a Venus flytrap makes its energy from sunlight. The bugs it catches are more like a vitamin boost. They give it extra nutrients that are missing from the poor, boggy soil it grows in naturally. They aren't its main food.

Flytraps are also excellent hunters. A plant growing outdoors will catch flies, ants, beetles, and other small insects all on its own. Even indoors, the occasional bug that wanders into your home is usually enough. What your flytrap really needs from you is lots of light, pure water, and the right soil. Get those right and it will take care of the rest.

Feeding is optional

If you'd like to watch your flytrap in action, feeding it is fine. It's optional, and it's not something your plant needs to stay healthy. A plant with good light will do great either way. If your flytrap is struggling, more light, pure water, and the right soil will help it far more than food will.

What you can feed a Venus flytrap

If you do decide to offer something, keep it simple:

  • Small insects, like flies, crickets, ants, or spiders.
  • The right size. The bug should fit completely inside the trap, about a third of the trap's size. If it sticks out, the trap can't seal and may rot.
  • Live is best. A live bug wiggles, which tells the trap to seal tight and start digesting. If you use a freshly killed bug, gently move it inside the closed trap for a few seconds so the trap knows it has a meal.
  • One trap at a time. Only offer food to a healthy, green trap, and only one bug per trap.

What never to feed a Venus flytrap

  • Meat, such as hamburger, chicken, or lunch meat. It rots inside the trap and turns it black.
  • Human food of any kind, like cheese, fruit, or candy.
  • Fertilizer. Never add fertilizer to the soil. It burns the roots. Flytrap roots are very sensitive, so even overspray from foliar fertilizer sprays isn't worth the risk.
  • Bugs that are too big. Oversized prey can kill the trap.

Please don't trigger the traps for fun

Watching a trap snap shut is amazing, and it's tempting to set it off with a finger or a toothpick. Please don't. Each trap can only close a limited number of times, and every empty snap costs the plant energy it would rather use to grow. Traps that are triggered too often turn black and die. Let your flytrap catch real bugs on its own.

Signs your flytrap is doing well

A happy flytrap doesn't need food to look good. Look for:

  • Strong, upright leaves
  • Traps that close quickly when a bug lands
  • Red color inside the traps on many varieties, which comes from strong light. In harsh sun or very hot summers, a 30% shade cloth is fine as long as your plant still gets sun most of the day. That's how we grow ours: the traps may not get quite as red, but the plants grow big, stay happy and healthy, and don't burn.
  • New traps growing from the center

If your plant has floppy leaves, pale traps, or traps that won't close, it usually needs more light, not food. Our Venus Flytrap Care Guide for Beginners walks through light, water, soil, and winter care step by step.

Venus flytrap feeding FAQ

Do Venus flytraps need to eat bugs to survive?

No. They make their energy from sunlight. Bugs are an extra nutrient boost, and plants catch plenty on their own.

Can I feed my Venus flytrap meat?

No. Meat like hamburger or chicken rots inside the trap and can kill it. Stick to small insects, or a little fish food, if you feed at all.

Can Venus flytraps eat dead bugs?

Yes, if the bug is small enough to fit inside the trap. Gently move it inside the closed trap for a few seconds so the trap seals and starts digesting.

My indoor flytrap never catches anything. Is that okay?

Yes. With good light, pure water, and the right soil, an indoor flytrap can stay healthy without catching bugs.
